Natural Craft is the home of bespoke hand-crafted wooden items made in England by Jason Townsend.
All of my items have been hand-carved. No power tools are used with the exception of a scroll saw for fret-work and a band saw for reducing timber in size. Sometimes a pillar drill will be used where a precision hole is required. I only use natural materials to make my products: I use natural un-dyed hardwood timber and natural oils and waxes for finishing.
My name is Jason Townsend. I live in the North Essex countryside and have a passion for wildlife and the beauty of natural forms. I got into carving because I wanted to make a wooden Hair Stick for my girlfriend. This was further encouraged because I wanted to create a Welsh/Celtic Love Spoon as a wedding favour for one of my oldest and dearest friends. I found the form of natural hardwoods to be so interesting that I wanted the end products to be as natural and true to the form as possible.
My background is more technical than craft but I have always enjoyed well-crafted items that have had thought put into them. I like to support craftspeople and artisans; I currently collect art-glass marbles (mainly from the USA).
I am a member of the British Woodcarvers Association, where I am a member of the national committee and editor of the association’s periodical The Woodcarvers Gazette.
